The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Roberto Sánchez, highlighted today that, in the first six months of 2022, seventeen regions in the interior of Peru increased their exports thanks to the increase in international prices and the development of new productive projects such as Mina Justa, in Ica.

For all these reasons, it is expected that at least ten regions will close this year with record numbers in shipments to the world, highlighting Cusco, Arequipa, Ica, Áncash and La Libertad; precisely, the regions that contribute the most to the country's exports. "Exports have been the highest in history," added the head of Mincetur.

Likewise, according to the Regional Trade Report - June 2022, prepared by the Mincetur, in the period January - June 2022, the regions that have increased their shipments to the world the most are those located in the jungle. In fact, "all the regions of the jungle increased their exports in this period," says the report.

The growth of exports from the jungle was mainly due to higher sales of coffee (+167%) and palm oil (+126%), goods whose international prices have increased more than 50% in the first semester, compared to same period of 2021.

Forest exports (+65%), gold (+38%) and Brazil nuts (+17%) also grew. Exports of cocoa and derivatives, attributed mainly to the jungle regions, amounted to US$135 million, a value 10% higher than that registered in the same period of 2021.

PERFORMANCE OF SOUTH AND NORTH REGIONS

According to the Report, the southern regions of Peru increased their shipments to the world by 21% in the first half of 2022, thanks to higher sales of natural gas and minerals. The southern regions that increased their exports the most were Cusco (+107%), due to higher sales of natural gas (+388%); and Arequipa (+35%) due to higher sales of molybdenum (+155%) and copper (+39%).

On the other hand, the northern regions of the country increased their exports in the first semester by 12%, as a result of higher sales of non-metallic minerals, agricultural goods and hydrocarbons. The regions of Tumbes (+30%) stood out due to the greater sale of shrimp; Áncash (+11%) due to the greater export of zinc (+28%); La Libertad (+12%) due to higher blueberry sales (+118%); and Piura (+17%), due to the increase in exports of calcium phosphate (+50%).

FACT

  • The liquefied natural gas that Peru exports to the world has become the country's third most important export product after copper and gold.
