The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) highlighted the important development of Peruvian exports of wool and fine hair products, which, in the period January to May 2022, reached sales of US$ 91 million, a figure higher than 9 .6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

As recalled, Peru sends these products to the world with great success, including those made with alpaca fiber, such as Alpaca Tops, a product that accounts for 38% of total exports of wool and fine hair. The export of Alpaca Tops increased 34.6% in the first five months of 2022.

The main destination countries for Peruvian wool and fine hair textiles are the European Union (37%), the US (22%), and China (16%). It is important to mention that China, until 2021, was the main destination for Alpaca Tops that Peru exports, receiving 47% of shipments.

POSITIONING IN THE WORLD
Peru has managed to position itself at a highly appreciated level in the world of clothing regarding garments made from alpaca fiber, one of the finest in the world. Thus, the Mincetur, through Promperú, has been promoting the “Alpaca del Perú” sector brand at an international level, created to position our fine fiber at a global level, publicizing its origin and advantages.

It is important to point out that the alpaca is one of the two domesticated High Andean and South American camelids in the world, and Peru has the largest number of specimens of the two existing breeds: Huacaya and Suri. According to information from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), our country has more than 3 million 600 thousand copies of alpacas, which represent 87% of the world population. In addition, Peru is the first producer of alpaca fiber in the world.

  • It should be noted that the main alpaca fiber producing regions are currently Puno (64%), Cusco (15%), Ayacucho (6%) and Arequipa (6%).
