Peru, as part of the government policies of President Pedro Castillo, maintains a close trade relationship with the world. As a result, during the first seven months of the year, trade in goods between Peru and its three main partners, China, the United States and the European Union, amounted to US$ 39,402 million, a value that explains 57.6% of the country's total trade in goods.

“It is the executive's disposition to strengthen commercial relations with our main markets in the world. For this reason, from Mincetur we work to give our exporters more options for their products, through the Foreign Trade offices,” said Minister Roberto Sánchez.

MAIN PARTNERS

China continues to be Peru's main trading partner in the world. The Asian giant also represents the largest market in the world with 1,397 million people. In fact, according to Mincetur data, China is the main destination for Peruvian mining (51%) and fishing (47%) shipments.

During the first seven months of the year, the exchange of goods between the two countries continued to grow as in previous years, but at a more moderate rate (+6.9%), totaling US$ 20,622 million in this period.

Our second largest trading partner is the United States. The exchange of goods with Peru has totaled US$12,365 million as of July this year, which translates into a remarkable growth of 48.9% compared to the same period in 2021.

“Peru and the United States maintain a very strong trade relationship, being the main destination for our shipments of non-traditional goods. The United States receives 52% of our textile exports and 34% of our agricultural exports,” said Minister Roberto Sánchez.

In figures, Peruvian agricultural exports to the United States, between January and July, have generated US$ 1,527 million (+30.4%). While, in textiles, a total of US$ 594 million (+37.4%).

Trade between Peru and the European Union, like China, has had moderate growth as of July this year (+3.3%). However, it is important to highlight that the European community remains the second destination for Peruvian exports of agricultural products (29%) and textile-clothing (9%).

In agriculture, shipments to the European Union have generated US$ 1,392 million (+11.8%); and in textiles, a total of US$ 101 million (+47%).

SIGNIFICANT GROWTH

It is important to highlight the increase in the commercial exchange between Peru and the United Kingdom, since, during the first seven months of the year, it has generated US$ 1,228 million, thus registering a growth of 231.4% compared to the same period in 2021.

This is mainly due to Peruvian natural gas exports, since the United Kingdom concentrates 45% of Peruvian shipments of this material, which, due to the international context, is scarce in Europe. Thus, between January and July, shipments of natural gas to the United Kingdom reached US$783 million.

FACTS:

  • In total, between January and July of this year, the trade in Peruvian goods amounted to US$68,486 million, a value 17.3% higher than that registered in the same period in 2021.
  • Brazil continues to be Peru's first trading partner in the region. The exchange of goods between the two countries grew 42% as of July this year.
