The renewed infrastructure will benefit more than 6 million residents. The estimated investment is US$ 16.4 million. It will generate a great economic impact in the north of the country.
President Dina Boluarte and the Minister of Transportation and Communications, Paola Lazarte, inaugurated the expansion and reinforcement works of the breakwater pier of the Paita Port Terminal, in the Piura region.
The renewed infrastructure, completed last January, will make it possible to receive larger ships and will contribute to boosting export and import activities in Piura and surrounding regions. It is estimated that its carrying capacity for agricultural exports and various products will increase by 200,000 tons per year, thus generating a great economic impact in the north of the country.
The works consisted of the construction of a pier 365 meters long and 17.20 meters wide, adjacent to the existing pier, as well as the reinforcement of the infrastructure.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) promoted this work that will boost the economy in the north of the country. The investment amount amounts to US$ 16.4 million without IGV.
That means the creation of new jobs and more development opportunities for Peruvian families. It is estimated that the beneficiary population, directly or indirectly, through this port is more than 6 million people. Thanks to the expansion works, it will now be possible to receive up to 4 ships simultaneously.
“This work not only has an impact for Paita but for the entire country. It will mean having greater trade traffic for goods and services, doubling its capacity. It is a clear example that working between the State and private companies in a responsible and transparent manner is possible, to continue providing services to our population and improve national competitiveness," said Minister Lazarte.
Paita is the second national port, after Callao, with the largest movement of containers in the country. Its area of influence is part of the regions of Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, Amazonas and San Martín.
The main products that are exported through this port are squid, frozen fish, prawns, fruits (mangoes, bananas, grapes, avocados and blueberries), as well as liquid bulk ethanol. Regarding imports, these are mainly pipes, steel rods, fertilizers, wheat, corn and soybean meal.
It is important to highlight that before the concession, this terminal served 300 ships a year; currently it serves about 500 ships.
Also participating in the activity were the President of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola, the Ministers of Economy and Finance, Álex Contreras, and of Production, Raúl Pérez Reyes. In addition, the president of the National Port Authority (APN), Manuel Hinojosa.
